 This is a five-part series because every time I try to write it, it turns into a foam-mouthed screed about the failures of the publishing industry and the evils of corporate greed.  For your convenience, I've moved all the "DEAR GOD WHY IS IT LIKE THIS" stuff into part one so that you can skip it more easily and get straight to the "So what buttons do I press" bit.
